Sex, Drugs, and Rock n' Roll: History as Story
One of the most useful teaching methods I have used in my classes is presenting the material not as "facts," but as a story - with a plot, a cast, prequels and sequels, and sometimes even a soundtrack. Extremely effective in lecture presentations, this approach can also adapt techniques from other subjects to develop historical skills and maintain students' interest in the subject. This workshop will demonstrate ways to recast history as narrative, how to incorporate journalism and literature techniques such as graphic organizers to historical topics, and avoiding pitfalls such as losing the facts in the colorful details.
